an epidemic. that's the word from the feds today. the centers for disease control and prevention in atlanta is now reporting the flu is widespread across 47 states. one school is using high powered screen clearance to disinfect classrooms or staffers there that it cuts the cleaning time for one room from four hours to just 45 minutes. a district in oklahoma cancelled all classes today. officials say one quarter of all students there are out with the flu. the feds say that the epidemic has killed 20 children, at least across the country. they tell us they don't have a count of how many adults may have died. but the cdc estimates flu kills an average of 24,000 people a year. health experts say it's too soon to predict whether this year will be above average, but it certainly started way early. jonathan serrie is live in atlanta, home to the cdc. any word on an end to this? it sounds like it's getting better down south. >> well, you know, that's the strange thing. although flu is widespread in most states, there are early reports suggesting that flu activity may actually be decreasing in some

at a middle school in atlanta. that's straight ahead here in "the situation room." >>> the senate has just followed the house of representatives in the past legislation extending the nation's debt ceiling, this time at least until may 19th. but for practical purposes, probably a few months longer than that. the vote in the senate, 64-34. the bill passed the house next week and will sign it into law. there will be an increase in the nation's debt limit, at least for the next few months. they will battle over this later down the road. other news we're following, three stories involving high-profile shootings at a time when the nation is struggling with the issue of guns. lisa sylvester is monitoring that. some of the other top stories in "the situation room." lisa, what's the latest? >> at least one person has been shot at a middle school in atlanta. the victim was conscious and breathing when taken to a local hospital. the suspected gunman is believed to be a student and is in custody. >>> police outside of dallas are investigating the shooting of a prosecutor. district attorney mark haas w

children were killed in a fire. it happened in the city of conyers about 25 miles east of atlanta. firefighters say the mother was able to save one child by throwing him from a second- story window. but four other children, the oldest, just 7 years old, could not be saved. the mother is now being treated for serious burns. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >>> time about 7:59. now we're getting new information about monday's near disaster in the san francisco bay. the coast guard says the crew of an oil tanker was warned just before it hit a bay bridge tower. ktvu's brian flores is in our studio with all of the details. >> reporter: good morning. the investigation continues this morning on what led to the tanker, the overseas shankar -- tanker, to sideswipe the bay bridge. we learned that the coast guard did warn the pilot of the hazard ahead. we were told that the tanker warned the bar pilot before the 750-foot oil tanker swayed the bay bridge. a report released states the vessel traffic service center was in constant communication with the pilot. what remains unclear
